Out On Dry Land.
Hunting for colour and texture in the dry dock. When the Irish sun stays hidden, the boatyards become a photographer's best friend.
When sunlight is scarce, the hunt for photographic subjects narrows. In the depths of an Irish winter, I’ve sought out the best “bang for my buck” at the dry dock.
On land for winter, boat hulls offer an interesting subject for composition. I have attempted to use their lack of straight lines and weathered patinas to capture light in a way few other objects can. While these are pictures of boats, the subject is secondary; the boat is simply a vehicle to explore texture, colour, composition, and form.
I’ve found that my tighter, more abstract crops are often the most successful, and it’s a style I plan to explore further.
I’m often unsure which approach is more successful, the abstract crops focusing on colour/texture, or shots with more context. Which are you drawn to more?
Slán and thanks for reading,
Tony.
